Fatigue and a lack of energy can cause you problems throughout your day, especially when it comes to working on the things that are important in your life.
Fortunately, there are a number of things that you can do to boost your energy levels. Different things will work better for different people, so try different things and see which ones work best for you.
Below are some energy-boosting techniques that you can try. Give them a go and see which ones work best for you. If you find one or more technique that you like and that works for you, implement it into your daily routine, or whenever you feel you need an energy boost.
1. Listen to energetic music
Different types of music have different effects on people, and you can learn which types of music and songs make you energetic by listening to lots of different artists and musical styles. Once you find the music and songs that wake you up and get you going, keep them ready for when you need that extra burst of energy.
2. Get plenty of good quality sleep
It is recommended that we get 6-8 hours of sleep each night. Make it good quality sleep by ensuring that you’re not disturbed. To help you relax and get ready for sleep, try drinking something warm before you go to bed (but not something with caffeine in it!), or relax with a simple meditation. Use ear plugs or an eye mask if you need to block out distracting noises or light.
3. Talk about something interesting
Sometimes we feel lethargic when we’re feeling uninspired. Have you ever seen a tired person suddenly ‘wake up’ and be more alert when they start talking about something that they're passionate about? It's a powerful technique you can use for yourself. Have a few favourite subjects that you’re really interested in and that get you going when you talk about them.
4. Caffeine
If we need a quick burst to make us more alert, we can try having a drink with caffeine in it, such as coffee, tea or an energy drink. Although excessive consumption can make some people feel more tired, short-term and strategical consumption can give you a quick boost when you need it.
5. Deep breathing
Have you noticed that when you’re tired you yawn? Yawning helps you to get a large amount of oxygen into your body, which helps to oxygenate the blood supply better and wake up the brain. Yawning is just a way your body makes you take a deep breath and get more oxygen, so if you’re feeling tired, don’t wait until you yawn, take several slow deep breaths to help you oxygenate your blood supply and wake up your brain.
6. Move your body
It’s very easy in modern society to become sedentary for long periods of time, particularly whilst we’re working or travelling long distances. Sometimes just simply getting up and doing something physical can help us to boost our energy levels. Have a walk and a stretch, do a household chore or do a quick exercise routine to get your heart rate up and get you breathing more!
7. Exercise regularly
Although not a quick solution, many people notice an increase in their energy levels when they get regular aerobic exercise. It doesn’t have to be a hard fitness routine, a brisk 30-minute walk four times a week could be enough to help you get your energy levels up.
8. Hot and cold showers
Try a minute of hot water, then a minute of cold water, alternating between the two for six minutes. This isn't for those with weak hearts, but it’ll certainly help wake you up!
9. Get outside
Getting out in the sunshine and fresh air can be very energising. Combine it with a brisk walk, or other form of exercise, and you can increase the benefits.
