Use The 5-Second Rule To Take Control Of Your Brain

In this video, author, podcast host and motivational speaker, Mel Robbins, gives you a simple, yet effective, technique for getting control of your brain and eliminating procrastination and doubt.

Our brains are designed to keep us away from the things that we find uncomfortable or difficult. In order to do all the things that we know we want to do with our lives, with our work, with our dreams, we’re going to have to do things that are difficult, uncertain or scary.

Mel Robbins asked herself why it was so hard to do the little things that she knew would improve her life. She realised that it all starts with a habit that most people have - the habit of hesitating.

When we hesitate, that micro-moment of hesitation sends a stress signal to our brain. It wakes our brain up and our brain starts to wonder why we’re hesitating, so it thinks that something must be wrong, so our brain goes to work to protect us.

So, how do you get out of your head and stop thinking about what you need to do, and actually do it?

Every human being has a five-second window in which they can move from idea to action before their brain kicks into full gear and sabotages any change in behaviour.

The five-second rule, counting down from 5 to 1 and taking action on the ‘1’, is so effective because it interrupts habit loops that get encoded as closed loop patterns in your brain.

When you understand the power of a five-second decision, and you understand that you always have a choice to go from autopilot to decision maker, everything in your life will change.

“Change comes down to five second decisions”
